MATHIEU CHEVALIER INTERVIEW
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF?
My name is Mathieu Chevalier, I have lived in St Jean de LUZ, in the Basque Country for 15 years.
WHEN AND WHERE DID YOU START THE PRONE?
I started on the prone paddle in 2009, I was introduced to the prone in 2009 by Laurent Iturriza (a sports educator).
I really loved the sport, so I invested in a prone and since 2009 I am thoroughly enthralled by the sport!
WHAT OTHER SPORTS DO YOU DO?
I surf, swim, sup and ski…
WHY JOIN TEAM 3 BAY?
For me joining the 3 Bay team is a great chance, I have wanted to work with Patrice for a long time and join his team. I wanted to combine his experience and mine to design a prone paddleboard with him.
Now I have the chance to paddle on a beautiful 3bay, on which I collaborated.
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL TRIUMPHS?
- 1st in the Capbreton-San Sebastien race, 63km in 2010.
- 5 times I participated in the Catalina Classic (California 52km) best result 5th in 6H07 on a 12 ‘and 10th in 5H38 on an 18’.
- 2 times I did the Dordogne integral on a 12 ‘one time I finished in 11H07 and the other in 11H27
- I hold the World record in 24h on a 12 ‘ Prone with over a distance of 130 km
- 1st place at several competitions in Brittany and the Basque Country starting in 2010.
HOW WAS YOUR 2018 SEASON?
My 2018 season was good overall, it started out with a new collaboration with 3Bay and I could start my season in April on a new magnificent 3 Bay Prone Paddleboard!!
I was able to test it at the Dordogne Integral… In the wake of the DI, I won the Kostaldea (San sebastien-St jean de Luz) 30km.
After that in July I had the chance to be invited to participate and try to establish a world record with the Family 3BAY!! What a beautiful experience…
After this record I had a month left before leaving for Catalina to participate in the race, I continued to train well, it was focused on this goal.
Unfortunately I could not take my own prone board, at the last minute the airline company did not want to take my board. This is life… I still participated and finished 6th… I trained hard but I especially felt strong on this board and to go to Catalina with a French board that was really close to my heart…
I will come back stronger and with a 3BAY in 2020!!
HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE YOUR PREPARATION AND TRAINING?
I organize myself like this:
From September to May I swim three times a week, the rest of the time I surf, with a Prone 10’6.
From the month of March I go out 3 times a week on a prone 12 ‘and 10’6, plus my swimming sessions and a session of bodybuilding.
From April to late August I do 5 sessions of Prone 12 ‘ a week, plus swimming, two sessions of body building.
And two or three other things as well but I keep it to myself 😁…
WHAT ARE YOUR PROJECTS FOR 2019?
For 2019 my projects will be to stay fit, surf, and travel… To return very strong in 2020 with new sports projects and a new 3BAY board!
